At the Leys Golf Society, we bring together golf enthusiasts from South Wales to enjoy our fantastic events, build lasting friendships, and enrich their experiences in the beautiful game of golf.

Leys Golf society is a South Wales friendship group of golfers who enjoy playing alternative golf courses.
Founded in 1957, upon the closure of the Barry golf club .
Membership is open to men and women over the age of 18 with a w.h.i.

The Leys Golfing Society was formed by former Barry Golf Club members, who used to play on land between the Villages of Gileston and Aberthaw known as the Leys. The club itself was formed in 1897. Sadly, the course was compulsorily acquired by the C.E.G.B. in 1956 and the Aberthaw Power station now occupies the land.

Attempts to re-establish a golf course nearby failed and the members then joined other clubs, principally, Southerndown, Glamorganshire and Cardiff. Cardiff is now its spiritual home with the society's boards on display.

The society was formed in 1957, recruiting a limited numbers of golfing friends. Within 20 years the society nearly failed and was saved through the recruitment of golfers who had never been members of the Barry Golf Club. Although for many years, members from Cardiff Golf Club were in the majority, we have encouraged members from other clubs to join us. We currently have about 40 members representing 12 golf clubs in South Wales. In 2006 we celebrated our Golden Jubilee with a dinner at the Cardiff and County Club.

Events

We have three golf meetings a year. We play for the Buchanan Goblet in May.  In June we have a Captain's day when we play for the Hughes Cup. Normally this is held at the club where the Society's Captain plays, except if the Captain is a Cardiff member then we normally play at another course of the Captain's choosing. Our final meeting is at Cardiff in September when we play for the Pugsley Cup, which is then followed by the AGM.

Finally, we venture on a 2 day away trip in early October. Courses such as Mendip Hills,  Pennard, Tenby and Trefloyne have been visited in recent years. New members are encouraged to join this trip as it is an excellent way of getting to know other members of the Leys, who are always  great company!

During the summer months, we keep a running total for two other competitions. The first for the President's shield which goes to the best performing golfer over the three competitions and a Vice President's prize for the highest total number of Stableford points. Very often, but by no means always, it is the same person who has the highest score, in which case the winner of the Vice President's prize goes to the player with the second highest Stableford points score.

All our competitions are Stableford, we play in threes and the secretary organises the draw in order that members can mix with other members from different clubs with whom they may not normally play.

Embracing the Spirit of Golf

Leys Golf Society is committed to providing a vibrant community for golf lovers. We inform potential members about exciting golfing events, the advantages of membership, and excellent social opportunities. Our events are held three times a year, catering to golfers of all levels. Join us in celebrating camaraderie, competitiveness, and the spirit of the game in an inclusive atmosphere.

Why not join us

Over the years our membership has ebbed and flowed. We recently introduced some Ladies to our membership.

We  are actively looking for new members to join us or for an  existing small society to merge with us.

The current membership fee is £10 per annum.

If you would like to attend one of our events to see if it appeals to you, you're welcome!

We would expect members to attend at least once a year, although ideally, we would like them to attend all meetings, but recognise that this is not always possible. We normally send out our programme in January.

In the first instance please email our current secretary :
